 Why Charlotte County, Virginia,
Is the "Place to Be"

1. The county has an aquarium - at the local convenience store, stocked with live minnows.
2. There are several local museums - to visit, just ask for a key.
3. For fun on Monday nights, people go to Bolton's for pickin' and singin'.
4. For fun on Friday nights, people go to Philbeck's for pickin' and singin'.
5. The local quilting society meets at Phenix Presbyterian Church on Mondays, 9 to 4.
6. There's no place to go that you shouldn't as long as you stop first and ask.

7. No social events are scheduled when the middle school cafeteria is being repainted.
8. There is a local beauty contest at the high school, but another favorite is going to see the young folks arrive at the Junior-Senior Prom in their best outfits.

SLIDE SHOW FROM
2006 CELEBRATION
  9. There are three local doctors' offices - and your neighbor will be glad to help you figure out what caused that funny rash.
10. There are seven local fire departments, all volunteer, as is the county rescue squad.
11. There are four branches of the county library.
12. The local bank never failed during the Great Depression.
13. The local high school was built in 1939 by the PWA, as a showplace for the state.14. There are no stoplights in the county.
15. You don't signal turns because everybody knows where you're going, anyway.
16. You call a wrong number and they will supply you with the correct one.

17. Traffic jams are caused when a farmer drives through town on his combine.
18. When two pickup trucks meet on a secondary road (one going east, one westbound), the drivers stop and chat about the weather, the crops, or where the wild turkeys are (Charlotte County's Information Highway).
 19. There is also a public-access electronic Information Highway at the college and the libraries.
20. The average age of students at the local community college is 32. High school students are also earning college credits before they get their high school diplomas.

SLIDE SHOW FROM
2006 CELEBRATION

21. You can live in a house, with trees and grass in the yard, on a beginning salary.
22. You can buy a car and safely park it in front of your house.
23. The best source of news is to visit the local eatin' spot for breakfast or lunch.
24. You can order two kinds of iced tea, sweetened or unsweetened.
25. Café au lait means you put a packet of creamer in it.
26. The best source of great food is a church Homecoming.
27. You can have a conference with your child's teacher in the baked goods aisle of the grocery store.
28. The county newspaper is published weekly.
29. People read the paper to see if the editor got the facts right.
GAIL BARNES

KATY S. JONES

30. The classified section is only two pages.
31. The first New Year's baby was born in February.
33. The Amish farmers still plow with horses, shock their oats in the fields, and travel the roads in a buggy or buckboard.
34. After dark, go out and look up. Depending on the season, you can hear the frogs peeping,
the birds calling, or even hear the corn growing. And the night sky is so large and bright -
you know that
whatever God that made you, holds you in the hollow of His hand.
